Our passage to the Canary Islands
After a leisurely cruise through the Bay of Gibraltar, the further start of our passage was actually not ideal. Relatively at the beginning of the trip and of course in the middle of the Strait of Gibraltar (one of the most frequented shipping routes in the world) we had a damage to our Genoa (= our big headsail) and had to salvage the sail to avoid further damage. Additionally we had to deal the first night on the Atlantic still with an “old wave” against, which made the beginning of the passage somewhat shaky.
In the further journey we were recompenced with some days of wonderful blue water sailing and good weather. It became noticeably warmer from day to day. It was a good feeling to be with our Maya again on an “offshore sailing trip”. On the last few miles to Las Palmas we even had relatively little wind and we also used the “underwater Genoa” (i.e. our engine). From the famous/notorious “nozzle” between the islands we did not notice much. Early in the morning on Wednesday we arrived in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria.
Overall we were a little over 700 nautical miles on the water and it took us a little more than 5 days.
